Tamar Frank

I work with light, space and the process of visual perception. Here I respond to existing spaces and environments looking at elements that are specific to the location. With minimal changes I relay focus and concentration redefining and analyzing the visual world. I try to capture a source that creates a heightened sense on how we see and how this affects us. The spectator plays an active role in discovering the work as it reveals itself.

Born in 1974 in Amsterdam Frank graduated in Fine Arts/ Monumental Design in 1997 at the Fine Arts Academy in Maastricht. After completing her studies, she established her company: Lightspace. With focus on public space and light Frank gained experience with public art commissions. Her biggest commission to date is for two towers of a residential building West Pender Place in Vancouver which was completed in 2011.

Frank also makes temporary installations in museums and exhibition spaces and for art projects and festivals. She has participated in various light festivals such as Amsterdam Light Festival, Glow Eindhoven, Lyslyd Copenhagen, Lumina Cascais and textile art events such as ‘Lost in Lace’ in the Birmingham Museum and ‘Triennale Internationale des Arts Textiles en Outaouais’ at Axeneo7 in Gatineau. She was a finalist in Darc Awards in London and the Lamp Awards in Barcelona.

In 2019 she launched a publication ‘Lightspace 20 years Tamar Frank’ A retrospective of all her work from 1997 to 2017. The book was presented in Angle Gallery Amsterdam in March together with a solo exhibition ‘Equinox’ and in Vancouver in April at PortLiving studios. In 2020 she received a work stipendium from the Mondriaan Foundation.
