Licht van Herinnering
Jewish memorial
Light of Remembrance is monument in Amersfoort made in memory of the 360 Jewish men, women and children that were deported and killed during World War II. The monument consists of 360 pillars of different heights, the average height of a man, woman and different heights for the children. These are placed together in the park as the families they once were.
Each pillar holds a mirrored cube containing a light and each cube is connected to a victim. On the death date of every individual a light ignites and burns for at least 24 hours. This refers to the yahrzeitlicht (year time light) a jewish custom where a candle is lit to remember deceased loved ones. On the 4th of May during Remembrance Day and on 27th of January during Holocaust Memorial Day all the light are lit. The beacon in the pond always burns. It is the eternal light that stands as the ultimate symbol of hope.
The monument is connected to a website that helps visitors navigate through the memorial and also contains a search function and links to background stories of the victims.
